Introduction
In 2017, Louisiana Boys State (LABS) and Palmetto Boys State (PBS) in South Carolina engaged in a staff exchange program. PBS hosted four LABS staff members who observed and participated in their program. During the week this involved observing and participating in every aspect of program, followed by detailed conversations between the two staff groups, both during and following the program. The success, benefits, and relationships built out of this experience have led us to encourage other states to participate in such exchanges, and we offer resources here to help facilitate that process.
Why be involved in a staff exchange program?
There are many benefits to participating in an exchange program for both the host and the visiting program. Just a few of those include:
- Exchange of new ideas and practices
- Observing different program structures in action
- Outside feedback on your own program
- Mentorship opportunities
- The ability to show others what you’re doing well
